H. A. Rey and Other Literary Geniuses

There are three books that grace my nightstand. Here are excerpts from each.

Received as a Christmas present from Keri is a hard cover:
New Adventures of Curious George
by Margret and H. A. Rey

As George waited, he looked out the window at the audience and the big blank screen. When he moved in front of the light that was coming from the machine, he saw his shadow down below.

This reminded George of a trick!

He arranged his hands just so... and a bunny appeared on the screen.

Then George made a dog.

And a duck.

And another dog.

"It's a puppy!" someone from the audience shouted.

Others joined in. "It's a bird!" they said. George made the bird fly away.

Then the audience saw George's shadow up on the screen. They were delighted.

"It's a monkey!" a child yelled, and the audience laughed and clapped.

"This is better than a movie!" said a girl to her friend.

Bought from Barnes & Noble, a leather bound copy of:
Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales

From this time forth no one invited the cat to be godmother, but when the winter had come and there was no longer anything to be found outside, the mouse thought of their provision, and said: `Come, cat, we will go to our pot of fat which we have stored up for ourselves -- we shall enjoy that.' `Yes,' answered the cat, `you will enjoy it as much as you would enjoy sticking that dainty tongue of yours out of the window.' They set out on their way, but when they arrived, the pot of fat certainly was still in its place, but it was empty. `Alas!' said the mouse, `now I see what has happened, now it comes to light! You are a true friend! You have devoured all when you were standing godmother. First top off, then half-done, then --' `Will you hold your tongue,' cried the cat, `one word more, and I will eat you too.' `All-gone' was already on the poor mouse's lips; scarcely had she spoken it before the cat sprang on her, seized her, and swallowed her down. Verily, that is the way of the world.

Purchased at Brooks Brothers, a leather bound copy (not pictured in link) of:
As a Gentleman Would Say
by John Bridges and Bryan Curtis

When a gentleman learns that two of his friends plan to be married -- and the gentleman feels that they are in for big trouble...

He does not say:
"I certainly hope you folks have a pre-nup."
"Why don't you just try living together first?"
"Let me give you the name of my lawyer. You're probably going to need it."

But he does say:
"That's great news. Have you set the date?"

Even if he feels that a marriage is doomed from the start, a gentleman does not go around predicting its failure. The bride-and-groom-to-be might share interests of which he is not aware; they might have redeeming traits that are not evident; or they might, very simply, be in love. Now is the time for the gentleman to keep his opinions to himself. If the marriage should fall apart, no one will want to hear him saynig, "I knew it would never last."
