Nadar Notta Problem
Monday, Feb. 23, 2004 - 3:49 PM

How asinine do you have to be to honestly believe that Nadar running against Bush in the last election is why Gore lost? Gore lost because our electorial system for the last two hundred and thirty years has been set up for the decision to be made by an elected few, not by the majority of the whole. The United States is not a Democracy, but a Republic wrapped in a Democracy. We do not elect our most powerful leader based on popularity. We elect others who are like-minded to elect the best President. Those electorial votes do not, according to the Constitution of the United States, have to follow the popular vote for their district.

But getting back to this notion that Nadar stole the Presidency from Gore and gave it to Bush... While Nadar no doubt captured some of the Democratic votes, I'm sure he also captured some Republican votes. On Meet The Press yesterday, he said himself that he's hoping to capture disgruntled Republicans in this year's election.

But to assume that taking out a third party would affect the outcome, you must eliminate all third parties involved. What about Buchanan? There were many more people running for President than Bush, Gore, and Nadar. I have no doubt that many more will run again this year.

The basic rights of Americans, though, is to run for President -- not the right for your vote to count equally in an election*. Don't like who won? Run yourself.

Welcome to the wonderful Republic of the United States of America.

*Don't get me wrong -- I think it's not only the right, but the duty of every able-minded and of-age American to vote. I'm not saying don't vote. I'm simply saying "majority rules" is a medieval way of running things and will only lead to trouble.

This entry dedicated to the most politically minded 18-year old I know.
