Fighting Good. Ambushing Bad. Friday, Mar. 12, 2004 - 12:55 PM
Yeah, it's tragic that there's a hockey player laying in the hospital with a broken neck. I'm not saying that it isn't tragic. However, banning fighting in the NHL isn't the resolve to matters of this kind. This didn't happen during a fight. This happened when one guy with a horrible attitude viciously attacked a fellow player from behind. Fisticuffs are a part of hockey. They make the game more interesting. It's understood that fighting has been a part of hockey since the NHL began. By the time you make it to the pros, you pretty much shouldn't just know how to score a 1-timer, you should also know that fights will happen. It's a risk you accept by signing a $500,000 contract. Fighting doesn't hurt the sport of hockey. Players with inflated egos do. Until you can ban having a big head in hockey, the game will remain dangerous. But that's a known risk when you sign a contract. As for Bertuzzi? Well, if I were commissioner, the closest Bertuzzi would ever get to the game again would be the stands. In short: Fighting good. Ambushing bad.
