Proposed "No Journalist Left Behind" Needed
Tuesday, Oct. 05, 2004 - 1:44 PM

I've decided to focus a little more on the elections over the next month or so. As stated before, I'm hoping people will be more informed than the loony left would like for them to be.

I was told recently that No Child Left Behind (NCLB) is failing. I've heard that a lot in the media and from liberals lately, even when it wasn't directed at me. I think most people, including most of the media, have no idea what they're talking about and are repeating Dan Rathher (or is his producer responsible for all of his "misinformation"?). So I decided to do some research of my own.

Here are just a few of the facts about how NCLB is doing.

More than 3,000 teachers applauded the early success of President Bushs landmark Reading First literacy initiative at a July 2004 national education conference in Minnesota . The conference was the first of its type to bring together teachers who are implementing Reading First in their respective schools, allow them to discuss the programs early successes in raising student achievement and share strategies for continued student success.

[A] report, released by the Council of Great City Schools a national coalition representing more than 60 of the nations largest urban school districts shows students in the nations major urban schools have posted substantial gains in statewide math and reading assessments since NCLB was enacted.

Seventy-one percent of Marylands (my state) third graders passed the reading exam this year, as compared to 58 percent in 2003. Limited English Proficient (LEP) students posted an impressive 27 point increase in reading scores this year. In Anne Arundel County, 63.8 percent of their third graders scored proficient and advanced on state reading assessments. This year, 78.5 percent of third graders scored proficient and advanced.

More than 100 African American and Latino school district superintendents from across the country recently sent a letter to federal leaders including Sen. John Kerry expressing their strong support for the No Child Left Behind Act signed by President Bush and warning that weakening the law, as proposed by the NEA and other opponents, would turn back the clock. These pro-NCLB superintendents are collectively responsible for the education of more than 3 million American students.

These are just some bullet points. Bullet points that show that NCLB isn't flailing and failing as liberals would like you to believe. It also isn't underfunded to a point that it's crippling the system, according to the educators that are using it.
