Driving Miss Crazy

Today I saw the most amazing car stunt I've ever seen in real life. As we were traveling east on 495 from 95 to 295 there was a car that was about to rear end a minivan. To prevent that from happening, the guy swerved from the fourth lane (the far left lane -- for my English friend, remember that we drive on the right side of the road) to the shoulder in the median. The shoulder was narrow, so he had to swerve back. On his swerve back he became perpendicular with the direction of the Interstate. As he did that the large dump truck that was behind him was bearing down on him.

At this time in lane three there were three cars basically next to the ones in lane four. The difference was that in lane three the middle car was tailgating the car in front of him. The swerving car had a chance to pull in behind the middle car in lane three narrowly avoiding being clipped by the large dump truck. If the middle car hadn't been tailgating, the swerving car would have hit that car and due to the density of the traffic there would have been at least a four car pile up.

In short, there is no way this car shouldn't have crashed. The moral of the story is, tailgate to prevent accidents.
