"But I can't take what is an article of faith for me and legislate it for someone who doesn't share that article of faith, whether they be agnostic, atheist, Jew, Protestant, whatever. I can't do that." where to begin, where to begin. let's begin here: the only sound reason for being opposed to abortion is a reason that demands opposition to all abortion. if you believe abortion kills children, why would you champion the right of others to have one? and if you don't believe abortion kills children, why would you be "personally opposed" to it any more than you'd be personally opposed to appendectomies? john kerry says that he believes life begins at conception--the point when a sperm fertilizes an egg, thus creating a genetically distinct zygote. this is science. this same man, however, repeatedly assures his base that he will fight for the right to choose. the right to choose what, senator? if it is life that's being destroyed by abortion, as you say, why do you so eagerly count yourself among its supporters? john kerry also says this to NARAL:
"We need to take on this President and the forces of intolerance on the other side. We need to honestly and candidly take this cause to the country � speak up and be proud of what we stand for." john kerry is personally opposed to abortion. john kerry believes human life begins at conception and is therefore present throughout every subsequent stage of development. john kerry calls those who would decry the destruction of this life, this very same life that he himself says exists, forces of intolerance. i'm sorry, but you can't have it both ways this time.
